Recycling Used Nuclear Fuel
There are currently over 100 operating nuclear reactors in the United States supplying approximately 20% of the country’s electricity and generating about 2,000 metric tons of spent fuel a year. This used fuel is currently stored at the power generating plants but is scheduled for disposal in a geologic repository. Advanced separations technologies enable the recovery of 96% of the metals in Spent Fuel, with only a small fraction ultimately sent to the geologic repository, potentially increasing its capacity. Consequently, separations are a central component of GNEP and the implementation of an advanced fuel cycle in the U.S. This presentation will provide an overview of separations technologies under development, covering both aqueous and dry electrochemical methods for processing used nuclear fuel. Elements to be covered include the chemistry of the processes, the process designs, equipment, and results of experiments carried out at Argonne.
