Activities in 2008

2008 NE Facilities Guided Tours for Summer Students

Target Audience: Summer Students at NE or other Argonne Divisions.

The Nuclear Engineering Division Student Outreach Committee is offering guided tours of some of the NE Division facilities for summer students. Each tour will last about 45 minutes to one hour. These tours offer the opportunity to see and hear about some unique experimental facilities which are part of the NE Division’s research in the nuclear energy field. You may sign up for as many of the tours as you wish.

Carbon dioxide experimental loop in Bldg. 206
This experimental loop is being used to test heat transfer and flow in an advanced design power conversion system which uses carbon dioxide instead of water to remove heat from the reactor sodium coolant.

Sodium plugging loop in Bldg. 370
This experimental setup is part of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) work being conducted at Argonne on sodium components testing for the Advanced Burner Reactor plant design.

If you need transportation over to 370, please let Laural know. If you have a car and would be able to drive some of the other students to 370, please indicate this when you sign up for the tour.

Target Audience: for students with some nuclear energy/nuclear engineering background

This exhibit presents the major milestones in the development of nuclear power in the U.S. and explains Argonne’s role in the design of nuclear reactors, beginning with the Manhattan project, to present-day commercial reactors, to advanced reactor designs currently under development. The exhibit includes reactor models and examples of components used in nuclear reactors.

NE Division Severe Accident Experimental Facility in Bldg. 315
Target Audience: for students with some background in nuclear science and engineering
The Engineering Development Labs section is in the process of assembling the parts for a large-scale corium concrete interaction test in this facility that simulates one element of a severe reactor accident in which molten core material has melted through the reactor pressure vessel and is deposited on the concrete floor of the reactor containment. Tour participants will see the laboratory where the test is performed and the test section itself (partially assembled). The test is being performed as part of a program sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
